A Message from the Principal

It is with heavy hearts that the Ipswich Academy community acknowledges the passing of one of our former students, Karly Barber, following a long and incredibly brave battle with illness.

During her time with us, Karly was defined not by her medical challenges, but by her character. Even as she bravely battled, she remained a cherished member of our school family. To many of us, Karly was a living lesson in resilience. She faced circumstances that would have daunted the strongest among us with a quiet, unwavering dignity that left a lasting impression on staff and peers alike.

We remember Karly for her kindness, caring and compassionate nature, and for the grace she showed under immense pressure. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. Karly gave her all in everything she put her mind to, and will be fondly remembered by us all.

School is where we meet friends, learn and have fun.

Year 8 Show My Work Evening

It was wonderful to see so many Year 8 parents/carers with us on Thursday evening at Year 8’s show my work evening. It’s great that our students had the opportunity to showcase their outstanding efforts so far this year to their parents/carers in school.

Timing of the School Day Consultation

As a reminder, a consultation period is open regarding the timings of the school day.

Currently, the school runs a period 6 on Wednesdays from 3pm-4pm. In the proposal the 4pm finish would end but to make up the required time it means that school will finish at 3.10pm every day. This brings consistency to the school day as it will be 8.40am-3.10pm, every day. There would be no change to our curriculum offer and key stage four students would still have four option subjects.

If you would like to comment on this proposal, please email info@ipswichacademy.org.uk. Please put ‘Response to timing of the school day consultation’ as the subject of the email. Please respond to the consultation, if you would like to. The deadline is today (30th January). This would start at the start of the new academic year in September 2026.

Science Exam Success: Year 11 at Suffolk New College

Our Year 11 students took a proactive step toward exam success recently by attending a Science Exam Booster Day at Suffolk New College.

This intensive session was designed to give our students the edge as they prepare for their upcoming mocks and final summer GCSEs. It wasn’t just about reviewing notes; our students dived deep into the “how-to” of high-level performance, focusing on:

  • Mastering Exam Technique: Learning exactly how to structure answers to secure those elusive high-mark questions.
  • Triple-Science Intensive: Focused revision across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Tackling the Tough Stuff: Breaking down the most challenging curriculum topics head-on.

We are incredibly proud of the maturity and work ethic shown by our students. They represented the school brilliantly and left with a stronger toolkit for their revision journey. Keep up the momentum, Year 11 – your hard work is paying off!

Upcoming Events

Year 8 immunisation

The immunisation team will be in school on Monday 9 February for the HPV Vaccinations. The team has already contacted parents directly, and has received some responses. If you have not already done so, please let them know if you give your consent or not so that the session can run smoothly.

Useful Tips for Parents/Carers

Safeguarding

Be Aware of Excessive Gaming:

If your child is spending all their time gaming, it might be affecting their wellbeing. Encourage them to balance screen time with other activities. If it becomes a problem, let the school know so we can offer support.

Attendance

Attend School Meetings:

Make time to attend parent-teacher meetings and any school events. Being involved in the school community shows your child that their education is important to you.

Reading/Literacy

Support Homework With Extra Practice:

If your child struggles with certain literacy tasks in their homework, offer additional help with extra reading or writing practice. This reinforces what they’ve learned in class.
